July 30 The Four Passions at Grow Radio

July 30 was a special show. I played an hour of English/Scottish folk songs. Then an hour of soul/R&B.

When Rosalie died, I was starting to explore English traditional songs, starting with June Tabor's recordings. I decided to finally dive back into it. Went swimming around and found the following hour's worth of stuff, including some great and weird Scottish singing recorded by Alan Lomax, a handful of dirty songs and lots of unhappy wives. The Sea Shanty Lowlands is particularly lovely as well.

Not knowing I had another hour in the studio, I had to wash the UK right out of my hair, led off with an 8 minute plea by Ike and Tina Turner: Stop the Wedding Please, Please, Please. It was a good hour.

The Four Passions, July 16 + 23, 2012

July 23, The Four Passions.

We played a lot of Sinatra/Jobim, a set of female rock and roll singers and lots of African and other world music. This was a good set. Here's the playlist.

Podcast here until late August: http://growradio.org/podcast?show=the+four+passions

Next week is an hour-long show of English songs, ballads and ayres, including quite a few about disgruntled spouses and betrothed, lots about longing for a loved one, a few that I can't make heads or tails of.

Hey, July 16th was good too. See below

some of the crazy ass shit you will do when trying to draw the scene when your daughter dies.

some of the crazy ass shit you will do when trying to draw the scene when your daughter dies.

a- don't use the word 'die.' leave it blank and paste the letters in later from elsewhere in the page

2- draw certain panels- the panel where you touch her back to wake her in the morning- draw that on a sheet of printer paper and paste it in later. if you draw it on the bristol it might actually happen

3- work in layers and hope they fit later

4- do everything you can to not be literal. make everything mean more than one thing. if it means cluttering it with lines then you're on the right track. because you then maybe can always step back

5. leave the pencils in the photoshop file, underneath. Just in case….
